1896 25C PR69 NGC. A mere eight Barber Quarters of all dates have been designated PR69 by the two major grading services (10/02). Seven of these coins are at NGC, two examples of which are dated 1896. One of the 1896 PR69 NGC Quarters appeared as lot 5572 in our June 1999 Long Beach Signature Sale. The other is the present specimen, which is slabbed in an older NGC holder. The finish on both sides of this coin looks as though it would deserve an Ultra Cameo designation. The richly frosted devices are set against a backdrop of glassy, unfathomably deep fields. The toning, while certainly not for everyone, should endear this coin to collectors who appreciates originality as well as technical quality. The obverse displays a two-tone appearance that is separated by russet highlights over and around Liberty's portrait. The reverse is less extensively patinated, although we do note some faint russet, tan, and silver-gray shadings toward the upper border. Perhaps needless to say for a PR69 Barber Quarter, the strike is full over all features. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
