<B>1896 $20 MS65 PCGS.</B></I> The 1896 double eagle, with a mintage of 792,535 pieces, is common in all grades up to and including MS63. It is scarce in near-Gem and extremely rare in MS65; higher grade coins are virtually unobtainable. The population figures bear this out: several thousand MS60-MS63 examples have been graded by PCGS and NGC, and the population of near-Gems drops precipitously. Only 11 specimens attain MS65, and none grade higher.<BR> This magnificent Gem displays full cartwheel luster and pleasing peach-gold patina, and a powerful strike manifests itself in exquisite delineation on the design features. Both sides are impeccably preserved, save for a couple of minute ticks on the cheek. A light grease spot between the 9 in the date and Liberty's neck may aid in pedigreeing the piece.
