<B>1896 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The proof Morgan dollars of 1896 show the Mint at the peak of quality during the lifetime of the series, and collectors assembling a proof type set often turn to the issue. In his <I>A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars</B></I>, Q. David Bowers (2005) offers uncommonly phrased praise for such specimens: "Good strike. Deep cameo contrast. Some nice ones are around. Whew! Those nasty years of weak striking, beginning in 1888, are over!"<BR> The boldly defined and beautifully frosted devices, in conjunction with the minimally toned and fathomless obverse fields, shows that this example is no exception to the rule. The reverse's delicate silver-gray patina in no way impedes the contrast on that side, and the overall preservation is wonderful. An exquisite 19th century proof.
