1895-S S$1 MS66 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. S/Horizontal S. VAM-4. Top 100 Variety. The San Francisco Mint delivered a meager total of 400,000 Morgan Dollars in 1895. In circulated grades, this issue is scarcer than the 1895-O, which has a slightly higher mintage of 450,000 coins. The relative rarity of these two issues, however, is reversed when one crosses the Mint State threshold. Despite this fact, the '95-S should not be considered a common coin in Uncirculated grades, and the influx of new examples into the collecting community has been limited to a few bags from the San Francisco Mint in 1942 and a partial bag from the estate of LaVere Redfield. Interestingly, a fair number of the few high grade 1895-S Morgan Dollars extant possess Deep Mirror Prooflike finishes. This points to a common source for such coins, but, unfortunately, we do not know the quality of the coins that emerged from the San Francisco Mint's vaults in 1942. On the other hand, we do know that the Redfield estate could not have produced pristine Deep Mirror Prooflike '95-S Dollars like the present Gem because Bowers (1993) states that the coins from that hoard were all "severely bagmarked." Perhaps there was another small group of spectacular '95-S Morgan Dollars that quietly entered the numismatic market sometime over the past century. Regardless of to who or what institution the present MS66 Deep Mirror Prooflike example traces its pedigree, there can be no doubt that it is a Condition Census survivor with much to lend itself to dedicated Morgan Dollar collectors. There are no problems with the sharp strike, and the surfaces are as close to flawless as one could expect for the issue. Minimally patinated with bright, reflective fields, this coin is one of only two so graded examples at PCGS, and there is just one finer (7/02).Ex: June 2001 Long Beach Signature Sale--From the Holdings of Andy Hansen (Heritage, 6/01), lot 6585.
