1895-S S$1 MS66 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. An extraor
1895-S S$1 MS66 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. An extraordinary example and one of the finest existing 1895-S Morgan silver dollars, as just one higher grade piece has been certified by PCGS. A single MS67 DMPL piece holds top honors as the only Superb Gem Morgan dollar of this date, regardless of designation. This MS66 DMPL coin is tied with one other coin for second best among coins certified by PCGS. Both sides of this piece are fully struck with deeply mirrored fields, highly lustrous devices, and exceptional cameo contrast. The surfaces are brilliant with subtle champagne toning that is hardly visible.
While prooflike examples are not rarities in lower grades, they are exceedingly rare in Gem quality. In the past, it was hard for dealers and auctioneers to avoid temptation. Examples of this quality were sometimes called branch mint proofs. The depth of the mirrors fall just short of proof quality, although it is not hard to understand such descriptions.
This date is the least rare of the 1895 Morgan dollars in higher grades, the Philadelphia Mint pieces being only known in proof format, and the New Orleans Mint pieces being condition rarities in all Mint State grades, but common enough if well circulated. This important 1895-S Morgan dollar should see considerable competition on the auction floor, as Set Registry collectors and other specialists take advantage of a remarkable opportunity. Population: 2 in 66, 1 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
