As is the case for all 1895-dated silver dollars, the 1895-S is rare in Mint State. The Sherman Act, which obligated the Mint to coin millions of silver dollars, was repealed on Nov. 2, 1893. Since Treasury vaults were packed with Morgan dollars, mintages dropped substantially until 1896. The 1895-S had a mintage of only 400,000 pieces, most of which went into local circulation. PCGS has certified examples in every grade down to Poor 1. Among Mint State survivors, Prooflikes are in the minority, and Deep Mirror Prooflikes are very rare. The present brilliant and exemplary piece has prominently mirrored fields that border on DMPL status. Frosty devices exhibit obvious contrast. Since the surfaces are well preserved, perhaps only slight softness of strike in the centers and a pair of tiny dark spots on the portrait prevent an even higher grade.
Ex: J.M.
