It is, of course, not common at all, but only when compared to the proof-only 1895 and the very rare 1895-O. Probably the largest accumulation of the 1895-S was from the estate of LaVere Redfield, who may have had as many as 1,000 pieces. Most of the Redfield '95-S dollars we have seen are lower-end Uncs with numerous abrasions. This piece is either one of the finest of Redfield's holdings or (more likely) not from his estate. The surfaces have the usual bright, coruscating mint luster with flashy, semi-prooflike fields. Sharply struck, there is a light overlay of ice-blue patina over each side with occasional light dabs of pale rose-golden coloration.
From The Leslie E.
