1895-S$1 MS64 NGC. A Choice Mint State coin that boasts slightly prooflike fields and clean surfaces expected for the grade. There is a trace of light gold starting to form atop the devices. On the reverse the eagle's chest shows partial feather definition, elsewhere the strike is adequate. The entire issue of 1895 silver dollars from Philadelphia, New Orleans and San Francisco suffered significant losses from the Pittman Act of 1918 which authorized the meltings of most of Morgan dollars still around in Treasury vaults, making the reported mintages a comical reminder of coins struck which never entered circulation, but instead went directly to the melting pot a few decades after coining. For collectors, obtaining a Choice mint state coin represents a major commitment and is one of the more expensive issues from the ever-popular Morgan dollar series. Few are found this nice, and very few are finer. Census: 160 in 64, 11 finer (12/05).
