Therefore, the proofs are substituted in collections and they are eagerly sought out in all grades. This coin certainly has its problems, but it will undoubtedly be placed in someone's set because it is one of the 880 pieces struck of this issue. The first disclaimer "Rims Filed" is certainly the most curious. One can understand a misguided collector cleaning a coin. And retoning is also understandable, as it is usually done to conceal a prior cleaning or other problem. But who needs silver so badly that they would file the rim of a proof? To further deepen the mystery, why is only the reverse rim filed?
