1895 S$1 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Considered by many to be the King of Morgan dollars, this proof only date is the key to a complete collection of the series, and the present example is a top quality piece. Roger Burdette recently wrote: "There are rare silver dollars .. but no other combines skimpy availability with a good mystery." Careful examination fails to reveal any grade-limiting hairlines, while a thin lint mark is breaks the mint frost on Liberty's cheek. Both sides of this Superb piece are entirely brilliant white with no toning.
Mint records indicate that 12,000 business strikes and 880 proofs were coined in 1895, although business strikes are not known. Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis wrote: "All of the 12,000 business strikes were apparently melted in the 1918-20 melts." This actually seems illogical since not a single piece survived, and the current belief is that these pieces were either dated 1894, or perhaps the entry was in error or it corrected some other unknown accounting entry. Another Mint record of importance is the annual report of dies produced by the engraving department, showing both regular dies and proof dies. This report for 1895 shows that five obverse and four reverse dies were produced for proof coinage, but not a single silver dollar die was made for regular business strike coinage.
Proofs were struck in March (290), May (180), September (90), and December (320). Van Allen and Mallis recorded three different die varieties, while the American Numismatic Association Certification Service reports that five different obverse dies have been identified. Unfortunately, the Van Allen-Mallis reference provides little detail other than brief descriptions of date position: Proof Die; Far Date with the date "set further right than normal;" and Very Far Date with the date "set much further right than normal." This obverse has the digit 1 centered over a dentil with three dentils between this one and the bust tip. Census: 7 in 67, 5 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
