1895 S$1 PR64 PCGS. The "King of Morgan Dollars" is the name often given to this proof-only issue, the single date that is missing from more collections than any other. While some collectors solve the problem by only collecting business strike Morgans, it is absolutely necessary to include this date in a complete collection of the series. Just 880 proofs were coined during the year for each silver denomination. While it is hard to estimate the number of survivors, it seems likely that 500 to 600 examples still exist. In A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Dave Bowers gave "field populations" for each issue in various grades. For the 1895 proof Morgan dollar, the total of his field population was in the range of 751 to 1,075 coins, the higher figure substantially greater than the original mintage. Bowers population figures clearly seem too high, in our opinion.
This piece, a remarkable Choice proof example, has light silver-gray color over much of the obverse and reverse surfaces, with lovely blue, russet, and amber toning along the obverse and reverse borders. It is sharply struck with deeply mirrored fields and light frosted devices. Although not a Cameo proof, it exhibits pleasing contrast between the fields and devices. As always for this issue, all of the obverse and reverse design details are boldly rendered. It is an exceptional example for the grade, a coin that will please almost any collector.
From The Twin Hollows Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
