1895 S$1 PR64 PCGS. For many years, one question
1895<S$1> PR64 PCGS. For many years, one question that has consistently haunted every Dollar collector is what was the fate of the 12,000 business strikes produced by the Philadelphia Mint in 1895. Many theories have been promoted, but the most logical explanation is that since the coins were allegedly struck in June 1895 (which is also the end of the 1894-1895 fiscal year), it is quite possible that the record keepers in Philadelphia entered the number 12,000 in the summer of 1895 to balance the books with 1894 Dollars. Whatever happened to the supposed 12,000 business strikes of this year, what we know today is that all that is available to collectors today are the proofs dated 1895. Only 880 pieces were struck and far fewer are known today, especially in high grades. This is a mostly brilliant example that has deeply mirrored fields and strong mint luster over the devices, giving the coin a noticeable two-toned appearance. The cameo effect is not recognized on the older style, green PCGS insert. A lovely near-Gem example of this classic 19th century rarity.
From The Milwaukee Shore Collection.
