1895<S$1> PR64 PCGS. According to mint records, 12,000 business strike 1895 Silver Dollars were produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1895. However, none have been authenticated as such. Many theories have been proposed about the status of these 12,000 pieces. Perhaps the quantity was never released to circulation, and was melted to help satisfy the Pittman Act. Or, perhaps the coins were indeed struck in 1895, but dated 1894. Perhaps they were never struck at all, and the alleged mintage of 12,000 pieces is a mere bookkeeping entry.
Numismatists may never know why there are no 1895 business strikes. However, survivors among the 880 proofs produced are available to today's collectors. Such a low production is hardly satisfactory to meet the demand from thousands of collectors assembling a date and mint set, all of whom long to fill that special hole in their holdings. 1895 Dollars are often encountered impaired or hairlined. Not so for the present piece, which has undisturbed gunmetal-gray and apricot surfaces. The strike is needle-sharp aside from slight incompleteness of definition on the hair strands above the ear. The eagle and wreath provide pleasing cameo contrast, although the older PCGS holder does not designate such an attribute. Only one fortunate collector will be able to obtain this impressive and important specimen.
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection.
