1895$1> PR63 PCGS. The sole proof-only date in the Morgan silver dollar series, with a mintage of just 880 coins. Although a surviving population has not been strictly determined, it is probably in the neighborhood of 500 coins, in all grades combined. In his Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Dave Bowers provided estimates of the total population, which he called the "Field Population," giving estimate ranges for various different grades. There must be some overlap, for the sum total of his estimates is 723 to 1,050 coins, the higher figure exceeding the original mintage.
While this is a necessary addition to a complete collection of the series, some collectors will excuse its necessity, stating that they only collect business strikes. The true collector, however, will realize that a Morgan dollar collection can not be complete without an example of this date. This is also an interesting date for the type collector to contemplate. While most collectors of coinage designs seek out the most common issues of a given series, some collectors do just the opposite, searching for rare issues or key-dates to illustrate each coinage type. For just such a collector, the proof-only 1895 is an excellent choice.
This example is a lovely specimen with brilliant obverse and reverse surfaces. The fields are deeply mirrored, just as they should be, and the devices have light mint frost, creating a slight cameo appearance that is more evident on the reverse. Each side of this piece has a few light hairlines in the field, and only faint blemishes on the devices. An attractive and highly desirable example.
