Excellent cameo contrast is created through a combination of lustrous devices and mirrored fields, as usually seen. A hint of peripheral gold toning is evident on each side. Light hairlines in the field account for the grade, but they did not diminish the excellent eye appeal of this piece.
"Philly 1895 Morgan Dollars, Where are they? Were they really struck" is the title of an article by Roger W. Burdette that appeared in the September 2006 (cover date) issue of Coin Values magazine. In this article, the author examines the mystery of the reported 12,000 business strike 1895 Morgan dollars that appeared as an entry in official Mint records. Burdette examined considerable documentation, and concluded that these 12,000 business strikes actually did exist at one time, and that they were probably all melted in accordance with the Pittman Act of 1918.
