1895<S$1> PR61 NGC. Only 880 proofs were struck of the 1895, an average number for dollars of the 1890s, but as all collectors know there are no business strikes available of this date. That does not mean they were not struck; indeed, mint records indicate that 12,000 pieces were produced. Since no bona fide business strikes have ever turned up in any collection, it has long been assumed that the entire mintage was melted under provisions of the Pittman Act of 1918. For collectors, this leaves only proofs to fill the hole in their dollar collection. Date pressure on proofs of this date is inordinately strong because of the popularity of the series. This piece is deeply mirrored and shows only light hairlines, the effects of which are greatly subdued by light, even golden toning over each side. The lower grade is accounted for by a diagonal scratch below the eagle's left (facing) wing and a short, angling mark in the same area.
