1895-O<S$1> MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Although PCGS has certified this Gem example as a Deep Mirror Prooflike coin, it is our opinion that this coin may actually be a branch mint proof. Several others who have examined it have come to the same conclusion. Although it is not certified as such, and no such pieces have been recognized in recent literature, it certainly deserves careful scrutiny. It is also the only Gem quality DMPL dollar of this date to be certified by either grading service.
Identification and authentication of a branch mint proof should be no different than that for a Philadelphia Mint proof. The following are basic guidelines for such identification: 1. The strike should be stronger than normal. 2. The planchet should be well formed without flaws. 3. Dies should be sharp although minor cracks and clash marks are acceptable. 4. Either the planchet, the dies, or both should show evidence of polishing. 5. The junction between fields and devices should be crisp and exact. There should be not transitional area.
Considering the proposed criteria for Proof coinage, we can now consider this specimen specifically. 1. Not only is the strike stronger than the typical 1895-O Morgan dollar, it is nearly a full strike. The only evidence of weakness is over the ear, and even this area is considerable sharper than usually seen. 2. The planchet is, indeed, well formed. There is no evidence of planchet flaws on either side. 3. The dies appear to be perfect without any evidence of cracks or other flaws. 4. The presence of such deeply mirrored fields suggests that either the dies or the planchet, or possibly both, were polished or otherwise specially cared for at the time this piece was struck. 5. The junction between fields and devices appears to be quite crisp. This amazing coin does appear to meet the expected qualifications for a Proof coin. Whether it was struck as a branch mint proof, or simply is an unusually special coin, is probably a decision for each individual to make on their own. Whatever its status, this lightly toned and highly attractive Gem example is truly a special coin.
Ex Jack Lee 1; Jack Lee 2. From The Jack Lee Collection, III
