1895-O S$1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC.
1895-O S$1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. The 1895-O is an issue that is known for unattractive, oftentimes luster-deficient coins. It is certainly not known for Gems and Deep Mirror Prooflikes, as such coins are virtually non-existent. This is primarily because quality control in the New Orleans mint was so lax from 1879 through 1904. Soft strikes are the norm, the mint opting to set the dies just a bit farther apart than the Philadelphia or San Francisco mints in order to extend the life of the dies. Only 450,000 pieces were produced in 1895, but the mint employees did not produce a higher quality dollar just because fewer coins were required that year, and flat strikes are the norm. To add insult to injury, most 1895-O dollars never reached circulation. Instead, they were stored in federal vaults, where they languished until the mass meltings of the early 20th century. As such, this issue is the most elusive O-mint Morgan in all Mint State grades. This exceptional coin defies all the usual rules for this issue. The only coin we have seen that is close to it is the Jack Lee Gem DMPL that we sold in our 2001 June Long Beach Sale. That coin realized an astonishing $189,750. This coin, as with the ex: Jack Lee piece, has very deeply mirrored fields. The devices are completely brought up as well with pinpoint striking definition over the ear of Liberty and on the eagle's breast feathers. There are just no obvious or distracting abrasions on either side, but perhaps a tiny dot of color in the center of Liberty's cheek is sufficient as a pedigree identifier. Because of the exceptional strike, depth of fields, and overall preservation of the surfaces of this and the Lee coin, we speculate that special care must have been taken with at least one pair of dies that was used in New Orleans in 1895. It would be very interesting and highly instructive to compare the two coins side-by-side to see if they share common die markers. This is the only coin to have been certified as such by NGC, and PCGS has certified only one also (the Lee coin), none are finer (10/03).From the Palm Beach Collection.
