1895-O$1 MS62 PCGS. The 1895-O is one of the absolute and condition rarities in the Morgan dollar series. Only 450,000 pieces were struck. Many were placed into circulation, and a sizeable number also appears to have been melted under authority of the Pittman Act. Lightly struck coins are the norm for this issue, with the dies appearing to have been set farther apart than usual in order to extend die life. No sizeable quantities of this issue ever turned up and high grade (better than AU) examples are seldom seen. This is an untoned coin that shows a few tiny flecks of grease that were struck into the planchet at the time of manufacture. The striking details are far above average for this issue with just the slightest bit of softness over Liberty's ear and in the center of the eagle's breast. The luster is subdued and satiny, as always seen, and there are no obvious or mentionable abrasions on either side. Population: 33 in 62, 35 finer (1/06).
From The Leslie E.
