1895-O<S$1> MS61 PCGS. The huge demand that the Treasury Department placed upon the New Orleans Mint during 1895 gave the workers there the incentive to produce as many Silver Dollars as possible with a minimum increase in workload. While this may seem like a crime to the modern collector, mint employees at the time knew that most, if not all, of the 1895-O production would simply pile up in bulk storage. In a vain effort to reduce die wastage and, as a result, the amount of attention that each press would require, the mint's staff spaced the dies unusually far apart. This did not have the desired effect, and five pairs of dies were required to produce a meager 450,000 coins. One effect of this coining practice that is still noticeable today is the poor luster and weak strike that has come to characterize most survivors of this issue. The few Mint State examples that managed to avoid circulation and widespread melting would certainly not make an attractive addition to an advanced collection of Morgan Dollars.
The present specimen, however, is another matter. A group of noticeable abrasions on Liberty's cheek and numerous scattered contact marks in the fields account for the low Uncirculated grade, although we note that this is the only limiting feature of this piece. The devices are uncommonly well delineated with noteworthy detail on the eagle's breast and above average definition on the hair over Liberty's ear. The lightly toned surfaces exhibit thick mint frost that flows in true cartwheel fashion. In short, this is a lovely representation of this conditionally challenging O-mint Dollar that is sure to elicit noteworthy bids from Morgan Dollar specialists.
