The 1895 is one of the most popular and widely collected years in U.S. numismatics, similar to 1873, 1875, and 1877. This year's notoriety, of course, is derived from the lack of business strike silver dollar production and availability of only proofs for this year and in that denomination. While this lot is concerned with a proof half dollar from that same year, one thing most collectors will recognize is the mintage: 880 pieces for proofs, the same widely known number for the 1895 silver dollar.
This is a magnificent proof striking and it is a coin that has been preserved in essentially "as struck" condition since the year John Clapp purchased it from the Mint. There are no hairlines on either side. The fields are deeply and unfathomably mirrored with pleasing mint frost over the devices, which yields a noticeable cameo contrast. The obverse is mostly brilliant with a slight accent of golden color around the margin, while the reverse is several shades deeper in color and there is also a significant presence of red intermixed with the golden patina. According to the November Census Report, five other 1895 halves have also been accorded the PR68 grade with one coin even certified as PR69! However, none can claim the pedigree of this important and visually stunning coin.
Purchased by J.M. Clapp directly from the Philadelphia Mint; John H. Clapp; Clapp estate, 1942, to Louis E. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:4275
