1895 $5 PR66 Cameo PCGS. An amazing proof half eagle,
1895 $5 PR66 Cameo PCGS. An amazing proof half eagle, one of the finest imaginable for this date, or for any date in the Liberty half eagle series. Both sides have exquisite orange-gold color with hints of pink toning on parts of the reverse device. Both sides also have highly lustrous devices that are surrounded by deeply mirrored and watery appearing fields, typical of high quality proof gold coins from this era. The strike is excellent with the central obverse and reverse devices fully detailed in additional to sharp peripheral design elements.
Careful examination does not reveal any pedigree markers on either side of this example, making plate matching with older catalogs a nearly impossible task. Perhaps the tiny flake right of star 7 will permit pedigree tracking.
Like most other proof half eagles from the late 19th century with mintages less than 100 coins, this piece survives from an original production of just 81 proofs. Only about one-third of these coins are still known today, and nearly all in lower numerical grades. In their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth wrote: "There are just 20 to 25 coins known, including those in the collections of the Smithsonian and the American Numismatic Society. Most of the coins seen are graded PR64, with Gem examples being extremely rare." These authors continued to note that full Cameo Proof examples are normal for this date. Population: 1 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
