These collectors might verbally compare specimens, or perhaps they will ponder the missing 12,000 circulation strikes. What happened to those coins, if they ever existed, remains a numismatic mystery. Others might debate the necessity of owning such an example as this, comparing the relative merits of business strikes and proofs. The most advanced specialists understand that a collection of Morgan silver dollars cannot be complete without an example of the 1895 proof. This issue is often called "The King of Morgan Dollars" for just that reason. It is absolutely necessary to obtain this date as part of a complete set.
This example is a splendid near-Gem with deeply mirrored fields and frosty, lustrous devices. Most of the design elements are sharply detailed, although the hair above Liberty's ear is flat. The surfaces are somewhat subdued by gold, lilac-gray, and iridescent toning. Many of these coins have been dipped or otherwise "enhanced" over the years, but this example is a glorious, originally toned specimen that cannot be criticized in any way. Just 880 proof Morgan dollars were struck in 1895. A large number of those coins have survived over the years, although mostly in lower grades, and/or cleaned or impaired. Few near-Gem or Gem examples are known. Population: 56 in 64, 37 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: George T.
