1895 $1 PR63 ANACS. This coin was created toward the end of a shining era in American history. The Civil War of the 1860s was a gloomy memory. The era of Reconstruction, 1865-1877, had been fraught with criminality as con artists known as Carpet Baggers sought to enrich themselves as the nation recovered from war, and the Indian Wars in the west caught the publics attention. The 1880s was called the Gilded Age by none other than Mark Twain himself. It was the decade of the robber barons, when the pursuit of wealth trumped the recent, gloomy, warring past. As coin collectors all know, silver mines in Nevada underscored this pursuit of wealth, for a vast fortune was regularly being taken from the earth and added to Treasury vaults via the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which gave the value of one dollar to about 80 cents worth of silver. It supported western mining and was controversial in its day, yet the irony is that, over time, as fiat money (paper currency) suffered from the ravages of inflation, this very commodity became a precious asset, both for individuals and for the nation and its government.
Any silver dollar of this date is a key date and highly desirable. Millions of collectors may seek to own one, but the truth is that few ever will. Its rarity is undeniable, but what of its place in time? The 1895 Morgan silver dollar is even more alluring once given its historical setting. Baseball Hall of Famer Babe Ruth was born in this year, and so was boxing champion Jack Dempsey. The first U.S. Open golf championship was held in 1895, and for the first time ever a professional football game was played in this same year-in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Little more than a hundred years ago, sports in America were mostly amateur affairs. Nostalgia beckons to many collectors. It forms the essence of why they collect. The United States in 1895 had not yet become a major international nation. That distinction lay ahead. It came after a terrible war was fought, in Europe, by many boys and young men born in this year. America would never be able to recapture the innocence that lulled the land in 1895.
This 1895 dollar is a symbol of that late 19th century era. It is deeply toned on each side and this depth of color does much to conceal the underlying hairlines that account for the PR63 grade. Other than the brightness from cleaning, there are no nicks or scratches that need to be mentioned.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
