1895 $1 PR61 PCGS. Perhaps more so than any similar issue, the possibly mythic business strike Philadelphia Morgan dollars from 1895 have inspired their share of wishful thinking. As Roger W. Burdette stated in his July 3, 2006 article Philly 1895 Morgan dollars, "Rumors persist of circulation-quality Philadelphia Mint 1895 Morgan silver dollars in one collection or another. Detailed stories have been published about these coins and their secretive owners. But in the end, no genuine circulation-quality 1895 Morgan dollar has ever been examined by multiple experts or clearly certified as real."
Among the more interesting urban legends about such a discovery appears in Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins. In that 1977 work, he wrote: "Rumors that a Chicago underworld syndicate turned up a sack about 1960 have remained unverified, not even one specimen showing up." He dismissed this rumor with the lucid observation, "Underworld characters seldom bother to wait 16+ years to take their profits. Had even one such coin been released, it would have been front page news."
Three decades have passed, and still no business strike 1895 dollars have materialized. In lieu of such pieces, collectors pursue proofs such as the present specimen. Delicate silver-gray patina with a touch of violet graces the moderately reflective surfaces of this sharply struck piece. Though the fields exhibit a number of hairlines in the fields and on the devices, the coin retains significant eye appeal. An interesting piece from this prized issue of only 880 specimens.
From The Beau Clerc Collection.

Coin Engraver: George T.
