1895 $1 PR61 PCGS. In the 1890s, well-heeled collectors could purchase proof sets of the silver denominations, which consisted of the Barber dime, quarter, and half dollar and the Morgan silver dollar after 1891. Compared with nearby issues of similar mintage, the proof dime, quarter, and half all command little to no premium compared to their peers. The dollar, by contrast, is a different (and famous) story. While Philadelphia produced 690,000 business-strike dimes, over 4.4 million quarters, and more than 1.8 million halves, the non-proof dollar issue of 1895 is the Loch Ness monster of American numismatics, suggested through circumstantial evidence and unknown in any collection, with scholars split as to whether or not it ever existed.
The demand for an 1895 dollar, however, is undeniable. With collectors' options limited to the survivors from the proof issue, the available supply has never been equal to the demand. The remaining pieces are avidly sought-after whenever they appear on the market and in any grade level, with even heavily worn and severely cleaned or otherwise flawed representatives commanding strong prices.
By contrast, this specimen is a predominantly gold-gray proof with only a trace of champagne color on the highest points of the design and a patch of violet-russet toning above the eagle's right (facing) wing. The strike is bold, and the reverse offers a modicum of contrast. Despite a number of grade-defining hairlines in the fields, this proof remains an unimpaired and appealing prize, certain to please the victorious bidder.

Coin Engraver: George T.
