1894-O $5 MS63 NGC. Although the New Orleans Mint struck several ten dollar issues after 1894, the 1894-O was the final half eagle from the Southern facility aside from the rare 1909-O. The 1894-O is also rare, with less than half the mintage of the 1909-O, but demand is less because the length of the Liberty five series deters most collectors. When found, the 1894-O typically grades AU55 to MS61. However, the present superior example has pleasing luster and surprisingly few marks. The cheek is particularly smooth. The borders are well struck, although the curls near the ear are slightly soft, as are the claws and fletchings. Census: 2 in 63, 0 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
