1894-O 25C MS67 NGC
1894-O 25C MS67 NGC. This beauty is from the famous collection of Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. and has a pedigree back to the New Orleans Mint in 1894. The present cataloger was directly involved with the 1996 and 1997 Bowers and Merena sales of that collection and retains fond recollections of that event.

Rather than create a new description, the following is quoted directly from the April 1997 catalog by Bowers and Merena:

"Sharply struck and very frosty. Light gray toning at the centers with gold and lilac fields, changing to splashes of magenta and electric blue at the rims. Very sharply doubled rim with ridges above each dentil ... In Mint State the 1894-O is quite elusive, although in lower grades it is readily available. Among Mint State coins only a few in existence today could seriously challenge the Gem offered here."

Today, a decade after that sale, the opportunity to acquire such a spectacular coin from the Eliasberg Collection rarely comes along. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (6/07).

Purchased by J.M. Clapp from the New Orleans Mint (11/1894); John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate via Stack's (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1553.

From The Belle Glade Collection, Part Two.

Coin Engraver: Charles E.
