Includes the following papers: Introduction by J.W. Powell, Director, with reports on field work from 1890-1891, "Mound Explorations," Thomas, Cyrus. Thomas was founder of the Illinois Natural History Society and he served as both Curator and Commissioner of Entomology and Ichthyology for this organization beginning in 1860. He later became interested in Meso-American languages and codices and after serving as Illinois State Entomologist, he was director of the Division of Mound Exploration for the Bureau of Ethnology [anthro.siuc.edu]. This report includes data on mounds and mound builders that is still utilized for research today. It serves as one of the most complete accounts from throughout the Eastern and Midwestern United States including the modern classification system of these ancient monuments. Some mounds listed here are in the shape of animals. Others in angular rows. Includes many text figures and plate illustrations.
