1894[$20] PR64 Cameo PCGS.
1894<$20> PR64 Cameo PCGS. The original mintage of Proof double eagles in 1894 was just 50 coins. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen suggested that slightly under half this quantity still survives today, quoting a figure of 20 to 25 coins. He also noted that some of those are impaired. As with other proof double eagles, the combined PCGS and NGC populations closely reflect Breen's original estimate, with 28 pieces graded. Only seven of those are finer than the present example.
In the Bass Catalog, Dave Bowers wrote: "A very attractive Proof, with somewhat lighter gold color than the preceding [Bass Collection] run. Cameo-like with frosted devices. One of perhaps two dozen remaining from a mintage of 50 coins. Again, among other Proofs of this date, certain pieces are institutionally held and others are notably impaired."
This is a splendid and Choice proof example with exceptional cameo contrast. The fields are nicely mirrored and the devices significantly lustrous, all with pleasing light yellow gold color. A few very faint horizontal slide marks on Liberty's cheek are all that keep this from the Gem category.
Ex: Quality Sales Corporation (9/73), lot 1311; Harry W. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
