1894 $1 MS65 ANACS
1894 $1 MS65 ANACS. The 1894 Morgan dollars, struck during the silver purchase drought that began in November 1893, are among the most prized circulation-strike silver dollars for the series. Only the 1893-S has a smaller verifiable mintage, and the 1894's production of just 110,000 pieces, combined with limited distribution and subsequent melting, makes the issue a key. While a bag of the date appeared in Montana in 1961, most Mint State examples today are in lower grades. Collectors have only infrequent opportunities to bid on Select and Choice pieces, and between NGC and PCGS, the two services have graded just 30 pieces as Gem or better, with only four falling in the latter category (9/07).
Though one could check the certified populations for an estimate of how rare Gems are, the piece offered here appears in neither NGC's Census Report nor the PCGS Population Report, as it is housed in a pre-Amos Press ANACS holder. Close inspection merely underscores the incredible eye appeal and exemplary quality of this dollar, both of which are evident even at arm's length. Both sides display excellent luster beneath a delicate layer of silver-gray patina, and dots of peach and orange toning mingle with violet at the margins. The devices, particularly the hair over Liberty's ear, exhibit the crisp strike often associated with this coveted issue. The cheek is utterly devoid of mentionable marks, and the similarly well-preserved fields show only faint luster grazes. This wonderful 1894 dollar is one of the most attractive and important representatives to come to auction in recent memory, and its appearance presents a tremendous opportunity for the discerning series enthusiast.

Coin Engraver: George T.
