1894 $1 MS64 PCGS. A pleasing near-Gem in every regard. The strike is full and the surfaces display far fewer marks and imperfections than seen on many peer examples. The luster is exquisite and shimmering and it is untoned, save some passages of very light tan. 1894 Morgan dollars are among the most prized circulation-strike silver dollars for the series. Only the 1893-S has a smaller verifiable mintage, and the 1894's production of just 110,000 pieces, combined with limited distribution and subsequent melting, makes the issue a key. While a bag of the date appeared in Montana in 1961, most Mint State examples today are in lower grades. Collectors have only infrequent opportunities to bid on Select and Choice pieces, and between NGC and PCGS, the two services have graded just 27 pieces as Gem or better (11/07).
From The Motor City Collection.

Coin Engraver: George T.
