1893-S<S$1> XF45 NGC. Traces of luster reside in the protected areas of this delightful coin. Bright silver in color, with a hint of peripheral gold. The surfaces show the expected minor handling nicks and hairlines, but no deep or distracting contact marks which are so often prevalent on this series. Examination will confirm the tiny die line within the upper T of LIBERTY, and the raised die lump in the left foot of the R of the same word. Importantly, these die markers are seen on all known examples of the 1893-S Morgan dollars, apparently struck from this single pair of dies. In later years the Pittman Act was passed which authorized the wholesale melting of millions of Morgan dollars in 1918, and it is believed that the vast majority from the original mintage of 100,000 met an untimely end in this fashion. Today, perhaps five to ten percent of the original mintage survive, mostly in much lower grades than seen here. Long heralded as the Key date to the Morgan dollar series, the only competition is from the Proof only 1895 Philadelphia issue which retains the crown as the King of Morgans, while the 1893-S remains the Queen and most elusive of the circulation strikes.
