1893-S S$1 XF45 NGC. Toned with dark silver-gray throu 1893-S[S$1] XF45 NGC.
1893-S<S$1> XF45 NGC. Toned with dark silver-gray throughout, with traces of luster in the protected areas. The surfaces are very typical for a slightly circulated Morgan dollar, with minor nicks and scrapes, but none are noteworthy. The diagnostics are present confirming that this coin was made by the single die pairing which struck the entire 100,000 pieces that year. Somehow, this date was not saved in the Treasury hoards, and virtually the entire mintage entered circulation or was melted under the Pittman Act of 1918.
America sank into a sharp, deep depression during 1893, so mintage tailed off of coins as demand fell. Perhaps the majority of these 1893-S Morgan dollars sat around in Treasury vaults waiting for demand to pick up. By 1894 the economy started to recover and demand was filled by the current 1894 Morgan dollars. Perhaps the vast majority of 1893-S Morgan dollars were melted as the numbers known today are just shy of 4,000 pieces graded by NGC and PCGS. Certainly not many to go around, and of course, virtually all of these are circulated. This is a very pleasant coin, and one which should suit most collectors.
