1893-S S$1 XF45 NGC. The 1893-S, with a mintage of 100
1893-S S$1 XF45 NGC. The 1893-S, with a mintage of 100,000 coins, has the lowest business strike production figure for Morgan dollars, except for the 1895 Philadelphia issue (of which 12,000 were struck, but of which no examples are known today). Moreover, David Bowers (1993) states that: "It may have been that tens of thousands ... were melted under terms of the 1918 Pittman Act." Still, many thousands were released into circulation. Because thousands of worn specimens survive, it is not an "impossible" rarity (David Bowers, 2006). About Uncirculated and Mint State pieces, of course, are considerably more difficult.
The Choice XF coin in this lot displays semi-bright silver-gray surfaces that darken slightly in some of the recessed areas and in parts of the open reverse fields. Sharp detail is seen on most of the design elements, except for smoothness on some of Liberty's hair curls and on the eagle's breast. A couple of small marks occur on the cheek and neck, but in large part the surfaces are quite clean for a large, heavy coin that has seen some circulation. Overall, a nice key-date example.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
