1893-S<S$1> MS63 NGC. Morgan dollar mintages were drastically reduced from 1893 to 1895 because of three factors: the Sherman Act of 1893 was repealed, Grover Cleveland was elected to the presidency once again, and the Panic of 1893 caused gold to be hoarded during this period. All the silver dollars from this era are scarce or rare, but standing head and shoulders above all the rest is the 1893-S. Only 100,000 pieces were struck, most of which were either extensively circulated or later melted, and today survivors are eagerly sought out in all grades. Only a few dozen Mint State coins are known today, and they are among the most prized silver dollars of any date or type.
This crisply struck example features original peripheral gold and sea-green color, and the fields and devices are refreshingly unblemished for the MS63 level. The satin luster is especially strong on the reverse. The present coin is destined to be the centerpiece of the finest quality set of Morgan dollars.
From The Milwaukee Shore Collection.
