1893-S<S$1>--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Pewter gray toning with hints of pale gold and lilac iridescence. Traces of satiny luster can be seen in the protected areas around the stars, letters, and numerals. The presence of hairlines on both surfaces accounts for the designation on the NCS label. The 1893-S is a perennial favorite with Morgan dollar specialists, largely because it has the 2nd lowest mintage in the series after the 1895; only 100,000 1893-S dollars were produced, and it seems probable that a large portion of these were never issued, but rather melted pursuant to the provisions of the Pittman Act of 1918, which resulted in 270,232,722 silver dollars of various dates and mints being reclaimed into bullion.
