1893-S$1> AU58 ANACS. The entire 100,000 coin mintage of 1893-S dollars were delivered in January 1893 and nearly every one went immediately into circulation. The number of examples in numismatic circulation today cannot be stated with any accuracy, but it is probably not more than a few thousand pieces in all grades. In addition, a number of counterfeit examples exist, although the problem with such counterfeit coins is not nearly the same as it was 20 or more years ago. PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and other grading services have taken great strides to eliminate counterfeit coins from the marketplace.
All genuine 1893-S Morgan dollars are from a single die pair and always show the same diagnostic features. The raised die line and the tiny die chip in LIBERTY are the easiest diagnostics to remember, as both are always visible, unless the coin is in lower grades with the incuse letters clogged with dirt, as sometimes happened. The diagonal die line begins at the left side of the upright of T, exactly at the corner where the upright and crossbar meet, and continues up to the right through the top of the T and beyond, eventually reaching the maple leaf on Liberty's cap. The die chip is a tiny raised dot that appears within the lower left base of R in LIBERTY. Both of these diagnostics only exist on genuine 1893-S dollars, and no other dates. The date follows the curve of the border with the digit 3 slightly high and the mintmark is medium sized and leans ever so slightly to the right (the VAM book says it is upright). This is a lovely example with fully brilliant luster, a trace of wear, and attractive iridescent highlights. Population: 11 in 58, 34 finer (7/06).
