1893-S S$1 AU53 PCGS. Famous for its status as the low
1893-S$1> AU53 PCGS. Famous for its status as the lowest mintage business strike of the Morgan dollar series, the 1893-S had a scant production of 100,000 pieces, bested only by the diminutive production of 12,000 pieces for the 1895. Since no 1895 business strike has been confirmed, the 1893-S is uncontested as the regular issue key to the series. Nonetheless, the 1893-S is always available for a price in VG to XF condition. Third party reports show a steep drop off in certified examples throughout the AU grades, and the date is clearly very rare in Mint State, especially since resubmissions likely inflate the already low populations.
The present lightly circulated example is impressive due to its smooth surfaces. Fewer bagmarks are encountered than on many Mint State survivors, and no marks are even remotely worthy of individual mention. The gentle cream-gray and gold color is both original and attractive, and satiny luster dominates the borders, wreath, wings, cap, and hair. Slight friction on the eagle's breast and on the hair above Liberty's ear is characteristic of the grade.
