1893-S$1> AU53 PCGS. A relatively high grade example of this important key date Morgan dollar, silver-gray in color with liberal portions of luster remaining on each side. Only the lightest wear is visible on the highpoints, and there is just a hint of striking weakness in the central regions. Wispy hairlines in the fields are accompanied by a small number of noticeable milling marks and abrasions, a few of which stray onto the central devices.
The proof-only 1895 aside, this issue has long been recognized as the premier rarity in the Morgan dollar series. The election of President Grover Cleveland and the financial panic caused by the hoarding of gold during this period marked a shift in government policy toward the minting of silver dollars. The repeal of the Sherman Act became law in the winter of 1893 and mintages were drastically reduced. Just 100,000 pieces were struck, a tiny figure by Morgan dollar standards, and the vast majority were either heavily circulated or later melted. Today, even XF examples can be extremely challenging to locate, and the occasional appearance of an AU or Mint State piece never fails to capture significant attention from specialists. This coin may provide an ideal choice for the budget-conscious collector, or for anyone needing an example of the issue who cannot afford to spend a six-figure sum in order to purchase a Mint State specimen.
