1893-S $1 XF45 NGC. Aside from its sparse mintage, researchers have speculated on other factors that helped to elevate the 1893-S to key-date status in the Morgan dollar series. For example, Coin World staff writers, theorizing about 1893-S dollar attrition in the newspaper's November 28, 2005 issue, say: "Often, bags of silver dollars went straight from the presses to the vaults, where they sat, often for decades. It was not unusual for bags of silver dollars to be pulled from vaults and the coins released into circulation as late as the early 1960s. They were popular gifts at holiday times, and anyone could exchange paper silver certificates for the dollars. However, not all of the unused (or used) silver dollars rested in vaults until needed in commerce. Many were destroyed (melted) before they were ever used."
This Choice XF example displays traces of luster residing in the protected areas, with occasional blushes of faint sky-blue visible under magnification on the obverse. A sharp strike left its imprint on the design features, and what few contact marks are present are not offensive. A great coin for the Morgan date-mintmark collector, or for one just wanting to own a choice example of this popular issue.

Coin Engraver: George T.
