1893-S $1 XF45 ANACS. The low-mintage 1893-S dollar (100,000 pieces) was produced during a down economy, helping to solidify its key-date status in the Morgan dollar series. Writing in "The Keys to Collecting" column in the November 28, 2005 issue of Coin World, staff writer Paul Gilkes says: "The panic (of 1893) was marked by toppling businesses and failing banks, and the infusion of European investors in American concerns did little to stem the downturn as the depression stretched overseas as well. This scenario provided the landscape for ... the 1893-S." Silver dollar production dropped at all U.S. mints, not just that at San Francisco.
The current Choice XF example displays light gray color that covers both sides, with deeper russet colored patina in some of the recesses and around the devices. While grade-consistent wear appears on the highpoints, considerable sharp detail remains, along with traces of luster. A pleasing coin with no obvious or distracting marks.

Coin Engraver: George T.
