1893-O<S$1> MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Without question, this is one of the Finest Known specimens of this date to survive. The combined NGC and PCGS Population Reports show a total of 3 coins graded this high, with none seen finer of this important and rare date. The surfaces are outstanding for a Deep Mirror Prooflike coin. Essentially white, there is a ring of light gold toning through the dentils, but the balance of the coin is snowy-white. Examination with a loupe will locate some slight planchet striation lines, particularly on the lower wreath, and this area lacks full striking definition. The eagle's chest is fairly well struck, with decent definition on the feathers in that area. Liberty's cheek is very clean and shows thick mint frost, but there is one thin line along her cheek. Identifiable by a nick under the S of PLURIBUS on the obverse and on the reverse by a very minor nick on the feathers of the arrows to the left tail feather of the eagle.
As 1893 began, the American economy experienced a deep depression. Many lost their jobs, banks closed and business slowed quickly. The need for new coinage fell too, with orders falling to a fraction of previous years during better economic times. What few Morgan dollars were coined likely sat around in vaults, only to be scooped up in 1918 to be melted under the Pittman Act. Hence, this date is quite rare and very difficult to find in Gem condition. The piece offered here is an extraordinary example, and a coin which must be seen to be believed. For any specialist, capturing this coin would be a wonderful achievement, and would certainly be a highlight of even the most advanced Morgan dollar collection.
From The Jack Lee Collection, I, II and III
