1893-O 50C MS66 NGC. Though the New Orleans Mint re-opened years after the end of the Civil War, the only Mint shuttered by that conflict to do so, it was never as relevant as it had been before, and almost without exception, mintages were small. With its mintage of under 1.4 million pieces, the 1893-O half is a low-mintage issue that was not saved in quantity at the time of release, and so high-end examples are highly elusive today.
The present piece is one of just five MS66-graded examples certified by either NGC or PCGS (1/08), and it offers immense visual appeal. Deep green-gold, tan, and silver-blue shadings grace each side, and the well struck devices are beautifully preserved. In sum, an impressive survivor.

Coin Engraver: Charles E.
