1893-O<$10> Liberty Eagle--Broadstruck Out of Collar--AU58 PCGS. One of the strengths of the Henderson Collection is the sheer number of gold errors available. The scope of coins available certainly indicates a sense of optimism on Mr. Henderson's part, as most collectors would quickly back away from not only the expense but the unavailability of gold errors. This is a spectacular minting error, struck without a collar, that resulted in a double-broad rim at 8 o'clock. Sharply struck with a considerable portion of the original, flashy mint luster still present, this example lacks the bagmarks that often plague later-dated O-mint varieties. Federal gold coins are much rarer broadstruck than their silver and copper counterparts. The New Orleans mintmark, which is associated with lower mintages, adds considerably to the desirability of this rarity.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/02), lot 8305, which realized $7,475.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
