1893-O $1 MS64 PCGS. Though Wayne Miller's The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook was written well over two decades ago, his commentary on the 1893-O issue holds up even today: "Because of its low mintage, the 1893-O is scarce in any grade. It is especially elusive in uncirculated condition. Most such specimens exhibit an excessive amount of bagmarks, which often concentrate on Liberty's face, and indifferent luster."
The Choice example offered here ducks this trend, easily identifiable today in certified population data. While the strike is typically soft at the central devices, the overall visual appeal is pleasing, largely due to the subtle luster of the silver-gray fields and the surprisingly well-preserved portrait. PCGS has graded a mere seven finer examples (1/08).
From The Oxford Collection.

Coin Engraver: George T.
