1893-CC<S$1> MS64 PCGS. Both sides exude thick cartwheel mint frost and the striking details are nearly complete on each side, something that is certainly not taken for granted on an 1893-CC. Minimally abraded, the surfaces show only the slightest marks and luster grazes that keep the coin from the Gem category. Most of the nicks seem to be located in the left obverse field, the largest open area in the design which is most likely to receive contact. Generally untoned throughout, there are accents of copper-golden patina visible at the border areas. An exceptional, high-end MS64 example of this key issue and sure to be of interest to a wide range of bidders. The Carson City mint was closed down by President Grover Cleveland who returned to office in 1893, as felt that Mint was not needed with the San Francisco Mint geographically close by. Cleveland had also closed down the Carson City Mint in 1885 when he first came to office, but upon being turned out in 1889, the Carson City mint was reopened by political friends. This particular coin is a delightful reminder of those simpler days.
