1893-CC Morgan $1 NGC MS61
1893-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-61. An important date in the Carson City mint series. An estimated survival rate of only 48,935 pieces. Lustrous and almost devoid of any color. A very pleasing example of this scarce date.

After the Charlotte and Dahlonega mints were shuttered in 1861, another Mint in the Far West began operations in 1870, this one on a dusty byway in the Nevada high country (4,800 ft elevation), Carson City. Like the two gold mints before it, Carson had a troubled history, with production gaps in 1886-88. The mint was established in Carson City to facilitate minting of silver coins from silver in the Comstock Lode, somewhat like how the San Francisco Mint was established to facilitate minting gold coins from the gold of the California gold rush. It did not take anything like a war to shut down the Carson City Mint, however; instead, an administrative decree by the second Cleveland administration downgraded Carson City to an Assay Office in 1893, a short 23 years after it had opened (PCGS # 7222) .
Estimated Value $2,600 - 2,800.
