1893-CC $10 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A, the only known
1893-CC<$10> MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A, the only known dies. The final Carson City Mint Eagle in U.S. coinage history, the 1893-CC is somewhat of an anomaly. It is more similar in rarity and grade distribution to the CC-mint Eagles from the 1880s than it is to the 1890-CC, 1891-CC, and 1892-CC. A low mintage (14,000 pieces) date, the '93-CC ranks fifteenth in high grade rarity among the 19 Liberty Eagles produced in the Nevada branch mint. Only 6-8 Mint State coins are believed extant (per Winter and Halperin, 2001), all of which qualify for Condition Census standing. This present representative is golden-red in color with a pleasingly frosted sheen for the grade. The strike, while not as sharp as that typically seen on other CC-mint Eagles from the 1890s, is still appreciably bold. Scattered abrasions seem to account for the MS61 designation, and the red color deepens somewhat around the peripheries of each side. An important coin for the CC-mint gold specialist. Population: 3 in 61, 1 finer (3/05).
