Anheuser Busch Brewing Ass’n” letterhead. Concerning the ALAMO BREWERY of San Antonio. “Anheuser-Busch WHITE LABEL Exquisite” LOGO. VERY RARE typed-letter signed / autographed by BREWER Adolphus Busch – on the letterhead of the “ANHEUSER-BUSCH BREWING ASS’N” and concerning the Alamo Brewery of San Antonio, Texas. In the upper left corner of the letter is a colorful label / logo that reads – “Anheuser-Busch WHITE LABEL Exquisite”. The letter is dated “February 15th ’93” (at St. Louis) and addressed to Mr. Reagan Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Letter reads in full, “Dear Sir:- I regret exceedingly that the papers of the Alamo Brewery, which you say you are in immediate need of, must have been mislaid. I went over my desk very carefully, and was unable to find any except those I mailed you in a recent letter. I cannot but think, therefore, that they must have been left with Mr. Philipp Carl of the Lone Star Brewery, with whom I conferred in regard to purchasing the Alamo. Will you be kind enough to call on him, and see whether my supposition is correct. With kind regards, I remain / Yours truly, A. Busch (SIGNED)”. ADOLPHUS BUSCH (1839 – 1913) was a German born immigrant who came to America in 1857 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1861, he married the daughter (Lilly) of Eberhard Anheuser, a wealthy soap manufacturer and the owner of the local Bavarian Brewery. A month after his wedding, Adolphus joined the Union Army at the outset of the Civil War and was honorably discharged after serving his enlistment, with the rank of Corporal. Thereafter, Busch became a successful salesman / businessman and eventually joined the management of his father-in-law’s struggling Bavarian Brewery. With Busch’s leadership and business acumen as a catalyst, the brewery’s fortunes improved dramatically and the company incorporated with Adolphus and his wife as the majority stockholders. In 1879, the corporation’s name was changed to the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association. When Eberhard Anheuser died in 1880, Adolphus assumed the role of President. By 1885, Anheuser Busch had become the leading brewer in St. Louis and the top selling brewery in the country by the late 1890’s. In 1891, Busch became the first major brewer to sign a labor agreement with a labor union. In 1895, Anheuser-Buschpurchased the ALAMO BREWING COMPANY of San Antonio, which Adolphus Busch had founded earlier along with a group of San Antonio businessmen. Busch was considered a pioneer in mechanical refrigeration and diesel engine building. He was also a wealthy philanthropist.
